We all get sick at one time or another. Some of the illnesses are expected at different stages of our life while other health problems may be due to lack of attention and personal care. There are illnesses which are common among children. Some of these illnesses are expected to make the child become stronger and immune to similar diseases later on in life. Coughing, asthma, and influenza are common illnesses and disorders in childhood. Chest infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia occur after a common cold or sore throat. If not handled immediately, these can develop into asthma. Asthma is common among children and hopefully the child will become immune to their allergies and outgrow the asthma syndrome. Asthma makes breathing difficult. The air passage to the lungs is narrowed and the person has a hard time breathing.

Sometimes, an inhalator or other aids are needed to help clear the air passage. Asthma can be triggered by bronchitis or an allergy, such as dust, pollen, soap, clothes and food. When a child develops asthma, find out the possible causes for the asthma. Isolate their environment, clothes and food until you can identify the cause for their asthma. Once you know the allergies, you can instruct the children to avoid certain items and slowly get them immunized from the item. Children should get over their allergies at an early age or end up having those allergies as grownups.

Stomach pains are also common among children. It is normally caused by eating too fast or eating rich food. Have them rest for a while and provide them medication to ease the pain and help in the digestion process. The pain should subside within an hour. If the pain persists and the child begins vomiting or displays other unusual signs, consult a doctor. The child might be experiencing appendicitis or some other internal disorder.

Cold, fever and rashes are usually caused by bacteria or viruses. These viruses can be air borne or spread via food and water. These diseases can be easily cured by medication. Some parents do not provide medication immediately but rather let the child develop some body resistance to the disease. Consult with the doctor and carefully monitor the child so they do not experience excessive discomfort. Avoid delaying the medication for a long period as the diseases may lead to complications. Provide the child with sufficient liquid as dehydration can occur due to those illnesses. Keep them cool and try to lower their temperature.

Observe the child closely for any unusual disorders that may be related to the senses or nervous system. These should be brought to the doctor’s attention and treated immediately. Otherwise, it might impair the child’s development. Difficulties in gaining weight or height are indications of growth disorders. Provide your children with the essential vitamins and have them regularly checked by the doctor. Any health program you plan to give to the child should be with the doctor’s knowledge and consent.

A lot of planning and research is done when a new born comes into the house. Everything regarding the baby should be considered and taken seriously. Nothing should be left to chance. A baby cannot say its discomforts and feelings. It can only cry and wail and hopefully the parents will understand the message being sent through the crying and the wailing. Otherwise, the baby’s health and well being is at risk.

The parents should consider everything with relation to the baby’s safety, health and well being. They might find some items cute and fun to play with, not realizing that the baby is small and might get hurt by these items. Similarly, they have to be on the watch for baby’s health and comfort. The baby cannot say if the item is itchy, too warm, too thin and so on. It is the parents’ lookout to research on the items and to ensure the health and comfort of the baby are not at risk. They should ask doctors and other people who have had experiences in raising babies. Baby bedding is a priority item when considering the comfort and health of the baby. The baby will be using the bedding most of the time during their early weeks.

It is important that the bedding is right for the baby. The most vital considerations in baby beddings are the baby’s comfort, health and safety. Do not get distracted by the appearance of the bedding. Check out the make and finish of the bedding before anything else. The make refers to the quality of the material. Look at the different types of material available for the bedding and check on its advantages and disadvantages. Some material might be too warm or too thin. Have a second choice for the material in case something prevents you from acquiring your first choice of material. Once you decide on the material, check on the baby’s reactions to the material. The baby might be allergic to the material. The finish refers to the covering. Go through the research process again and once you’ve decided, check out the baby’s reactions to your choices. Remember the baby will be using the bedding constantly for the first few weeks and you should ensure nothing disrupts their serenity.

Your choices might be available in several brands. Choose the brand that provides the best quality. You should not scrimp on this item since baby will be using it a great deal of the time. Their comfort and health is the primary concern. Take precautions in case of diaper spills. This is a common occurrence and little precautions, like rubber mats and the like, will help preserve the beddings and avoid frequent laundering. Keep several sets of beddings since you may be changing beddings from time to time. It is important that the beddings are fresh and neat for baby’s comfort. Blankets and small pillows should be used with care. Make sure they are positioned carefully so there is no chance of suffocating the baby. Also check regularly the temperature of the baby in case we wrapped the baby too much and the baby is feeling too warm. Keep the atmosphere pleasant. Some parents prefer keeping the baby in an enclosed and controlled environment while others prefer the baby to be exposed to the natural weather with enough clothing for their comfort. Whatever the choice, be sure the comfort and health of the child is addressed appropriately.

Limit your list to not more than a hundred names. You might be having duplications or variants of a similar name. You’ve gone over the first stage which is checking for compatibility and consistency. If you like the name but it doesn’t sound well or appear well in writing, apply some variants to the name. You want a name that sounds great and looks good on paper. Spelling the name should also be a consideration. You don’t want your child explaining all the time how to spell their name. There may be problems later on when validating the true name on legal documents. Consider the vowels and consonants used in the name. Do not complicate the spelling of the name.

The meaning of the name is a big concern to parents. It may impact the child later on in life when they learn the meaning of their name. Check the books for possible meanings. Some words may have more than one meaning. Look at all the possible meanings and see if there are meanings that relate to bad things. You should ensure that all meanings of the word are acceptable and pleasant. You don’t want your child arguing on the appropriate meaning of their name. All meanings should be associated with good qualities and traits. Don’t be over imaginative or creative. People try to think of names that may be the first time it will be used. They try variations to show uniqueness in the names, forgetting that spelling and pronunciation are vital considerations.

Don’t make the name too long. One to three syllables may be sufficient. Some parents may add a second name to ensure there is no duplicate name or further differentiate the person from probable existing names. Remember that the child will be writing their name many times over and a long name can be tiring and time consuming. The child might end up shortening the name when writing and this will defeat the purpose of the unique name. Think of a nickname that could go with the true name. Nicknames, like full names, should be tested for compatibility. A nickname may be cute to you but could be the subject of fun and ridicule by your child’s peers. Initials are also another consideration. Try the standard first letters of the full name as the initials. If it sounds or looks awkward, you can adjust the initials slightly by adding the second letter to give it a better appearance. Make sure the initials do not look or sound weird. Initials are sometimes used for documents and clothes and it should look appealing and professional.

Think of the gender. You might have selected a name that is appropriate for a particular gender. If you insist on the name, try variations that will provide you with the right gender for your baby, such as John and Joan.
Try out the name with relatives and friends and get their comments about it. They may have their own ideas about what the baby’s name should be. Be diplomatic and firm. Have an open mind and consider the future of your child when selecting the proper name.

From the day of your pregnancy, you start thinking of names for the baby. At first, the names may be generic but as the day of the baby’s birth approaches, you become more specific as you learn the baby’s gender. Getting the right name for the baby is the first vital aspect in taking care of the baby. Remember that the baby will be carrying the name for the rest of their life and their name will be used in every form of communication.

Their name might even become known worldwide and respected in all levels of society. People sometimes re-use names of other family members or ancestors instead of trying to find a new and unique name for their baby. They feel accustomed to the name used by their ancestors and apply it to their baby. They have no originality and creativity. They do not give the proper relevance to the deed. Giving an appropriate name is one of the most unforgettable things you can do for the child. The name represents the baby’s existence and identity. The baby will be remembered by that name forever, during their lifetime and even in their death. The person should feel happy and satisfied that their parents gave serious thought and consideration to their names. They should feel proud of their names and not want to hide their name in embarrassment or shame.

There are thousands of names to choose from. You can be lethargic and re-use a name from one of your ancestors or family relatives. You can be religious and select from one of the names from a religious book, like the Bible or select one of the saints being celebrated on the day of your child’s birth. Other people choose names of celebrities or famous people and superstitiously hope that fame and fortune goes with the name. Others want their own names to be carried forever and name their child Junior or the second, third and so on, which is the case with some royal families. There are thousands of names in baby books and in the Internet. Before deciding on whether the name you choose should be from a family ancestor, a historical person or other sources, think of the names that appeal to you. Try to have a fairly long list at the start so you have a range for selection. Say the full name aloud and feel your reaction when you hear the name. Write the name down and see how it appears on paper. Some nice names may appear humorous and ridiculous when spoken or written down. You will have to filter these out of your list. You don’t want your child feeling ridiculed and laughed at every time their name is spoken or written down. Remember the child will be carrying the family surname as well and the name should not be blemished by snide comments.

Take your time. You should start planning the child’s name by the middle of the pregnancy. Due importance should be given to the name. You should not wait until the child’s birth and then hurry up and give the first name that comes to mind. Once the child is born, you have several days at most to give a name to the child for proper identification. The first official document that will carry the child’s name is the birth certificate. Start early. Every time you think of a good name, write it down in the list. We’ll have more tips on the second part.

Having a baby carries with it a great deal of responsibility and accountability. Are you ready for it? Newly-weds are full of love and passion for one another and oftentimes ignore the practicality of having a baby. Their primary reaction upon getting married is to have a baby that they can care for and shower their affection on. Parents of the bride and groom and relatives look forward to an offspring in the immediate future.

They may have good reasons, such as having a child that can carry the family name to the next generation or someone that they can play with as grandparents. Grandparents have gone through the gambit and understand the hardships and sacrifices that have to be undertaken when having a child. However, they might not realize the financial standings of the parents or the aspirations and dreams of the parents for themselves.

Consider the costs involved in having a child. Costs start from the time of pregnancy. Doctor’s fees, medications and healthy diet foods are costs you have to contend with at the start. This is just the start. You will be incurring more costs as time goes by. You will need to consider the nursery and all the accessories that go with having a new-born baby. You might have to find a bigger home, one with sufficient rooms for a nursery and a playroom. You might have to renovate the rooms to turn them into a nursery and a playroom. If you are low on finances, you can defer the playroom until the baby grows up. You have to stock up on diapers, clothes, milk, food, bottles, and other items for sleeping and feeding. The doctor’s charges will still continue since the baby still requires regular checkups and vaccinations. Check with your office on maternity and children benefits. There may be costs that can be covered by your company’s medical and employee program.

One major factor is the impact it will have on your work. You might not be able to work late or during weekends to complete those special projects. Bringing work home might not be possible as your time at home will be largely dedicated to the baby’s needs. Keep in mind that your time now belongs to the baby and your availability should revolve around the baby’s needs. However, you should prove to your superiors that you can still complete your projects and perform your work duties excellently.

If you are both working, consider the costs and arrangements for a child care center. You may have to leave the baby at home with a babysitter or at a care center. Whatever the case, you should be prepared to leave the baby in somebody’s care. Some parents prefer taking care of the child personally and might even sacrifice their work and career for the child. This should be assessed and discussed between the couple. Resigning from work will mean less income but it will provide the child with the personal attention of the parent.

The couple may have different viewpoints on how to raise the child. There are values and traits which should be instilled on the child.. Discipline, religion, and physical activities are some of the areas that the couples should discuss and agree on. These are contentious issues which can cause conflict and arguments between the couple. The child might even get confused on which parent they should follow.

These are problems that will occur in the future. Understanding and preparing for them now may help resolve prospective problems. Children are a blessing and nothing is more enjoyable than seeing the happiness in a child’s face. However, be prudent and cautious. Decide well. Your career and the child’s future should be synchronized and planned carefully.

Sudden bursts of outrage are normal among children between 2 to 4 years old. It is their way of attracting attention and getting what they want. They cannot explain in a reasonable manner and they cannot properly express their desires. Parents on the other hand have difficulty reasoning with the child and explaining their actions. A child is smart. They notice their sudden bursts or tantrums work effectively at times and they get what they want. Parents give in to children’s tantrums out of embarrassment if guests or other people are observing them with their child or to keep the child quiet. Acceding to the child’s tantrums is dangerous as this could create a precedence which will make the child assume tantrums are needed to attract parents and get what they want.

Observe the child’s tantrums and see what is it they want. It may not be advisable to give in to a child’s tantrums since some of their desires may be harmful to them. Check what is it they want and see if it is something that can be given to the child for that moment. They might want some snacks which might affect their appetites for their regular meal or an object which may be dangerous for them to hold and play with. Ignoring a child’s tantrums is one way of training the child to stop tantrums. Continue with your tasks and avoid getting upset or reacting to the child’s tantrums. If a child notices your reactions, it may inspire them to continue their tantrums with more vim and vigor. Children will stop creating tantrums when they see there is no reaction from the parents.

Tantrums are nerve-wracking. We worry if the child is harming themselves with those incessant bawling and banging on the floor. Children will try to hold their breath as part of their tantrums. Children may also get into the habit of throwing things all around. This is risky as the child might accidentally hit something valuable or damage other objects. Observe the child and see that they are not doing anything harmful to themselves. Get accustomed to their type of tantrums so you can readily recognize if the child is really hurt or simply throwing a tantrum. Tantrums in public are embarrassing. People are looking at you with disapproving looks and wondering why the child is acting in such a fashion.

If you are in public, such as the supermarket, it is better to leave the premises and go home where you can educate the child in private. If possible, leave the child in a care center or with someone responsible while you complete your chores. Orient the person on the child’s tantrum moods so they too are prepared to handle the child properly. ‘
Show the child it is not right to throw tantrums and that they should not expect to get what they want every time. Be patient and observant. The child may need something such as food or sleep, and tantrums may be their only way to get your attention.

Baby Strollers are necessary. When you want to take baby out, it is advisable to have a stroller. Some people prefer carrying the child in a pouch but the weight can become heavy if you plan to go a long distance. Baby strollers are more convenient and practical. With the right stroller, you can load all of baby’s essentials. If this is your first baby, then you should research on the type of stroller to get. Some people have no choice as they are provided with a hand-me-down stroller from their family, relatives or friends. This is the cheapest approach but the stroller may not be what you want for the baby. If possible, try to get the stroller you want.

Choose a stroller that is stable and firm. Technology can scan the mother and check whether it’s a single baby, twins or even triplets. The normal birth is a single baby but it’s better to play safe and make sure before buying the stroller. Get a stroller which is durable and within your budget. If you can’t afford a durable stroller, you should consider just getting the hand-me-down. There is no point in spending money for a stroller that will not last unless you have no other choice. Choose the type that can be upgraded as the child grows. Your initial stroller should fit a small baby but as baby grows, you will need to adjust the stroller for the larger size.

The stroller should be easy to open and close. Try experimenting in the shop with one hand or one hand and see how easy is it. Try holding a weight on your other hand and simulate you are holding baby, Try checking if you can easily engage the brakes, adjust the harness and backrest, and access the basket easily. You should try all the gadgets with one hand to see if they can be opened and closed with ease. Try lifting the stroller. Some strollers may be safe and comfortable but too difficult to lift and carry.

Seat belt restraints are very important safety features and should be thoroughly checked out. Be sure the buckles are easy to lock and unlock and still be comfort able to the child. The unlock should not be so easy that it could get loose on its own. Check the adjustability of the belt and see that it can be secured around the baby’s waist and the crotch straps loop into the waist belt. It should be fastened so the baby cannot slip out of the fastenings. If you are jogging with a stroller, use a five-point harness.

Inspect the frame. A robust and strong frame, such as steel and aluminum will keep the stroller lasting for a long time but it might not be easy to maneuver nor carry around. Plastic is the other option but the wear and tear is faster. If you can carry heavy weights and may have other babies in the future, choose the stronger frame. Together with that comes the fabric around the frame. The fabric should be easy to remove and cleaned. The fabric should be easily replaceable as it might wear out fast.

The seat and canopy should have a wide range for adjustment. Check that the seat can be fully reclined so baby can sleep comfortable. The canopy should be able to cover the baby from all kinds of weather. One salient point is the storage space. You need enough space in the trolley to carry baby’s essentials, like bottles and diapers. Test if the stroller will tip over once it gets overloaded. Don’t plan to overload the stroller but test it as a safety precaution to see the risk.
The swivel wheels should be easy to turn and should have locking brakes. During those short instances you have to leave the stroller unattended, you should be able to lock it so it will not roll away. The handle of the stroller should be adjustable so people of different heights can hold on the stroller easily and comfortably. Take your time and choose well. Your baby’s life may be at risk.

Children learn to hear at a very early age. Research shows that hearing is one of the first senses the child responds to. Humming and singing songs to the baby are heard and communicated to the child’s mind. The child hears the soothing music and responds to it positively. When a baby feels disturbed, is hungry or sleepy they cry and seek attention. After a while, you get to recognize the baby’s cries and figure out what the baby is looking for.

In the process of providing the child with the proper needs, you talk to the child gently and you start humming and singing soothing music. The baby responds positively and quiets down regardless of what is being said or sang. The gentle tones and calm voice brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the child’s mind. Music is a good therapy for the baby. It lowers the stress and tensions.

From birth to six months, the baby enjoys the music with body movements. If the baby is awake and active, try playing a lively tune and dance while holding the baby. Feel the baby’s emotions of joy and excitement. Put the baby in the crib and watch the baby turn their heads to locate the sound of the music. These are indications that the sounds are being transmitted to the baby’s mind. Try experimenting with different kinds of music. It also provides the baby with some form of movements. From six months to one year, the baby has some control over their movements. Their eye and hand coordination should improve during this period. Give them a rattle and watch how the sound of the rattle affects them. They realize that when they shake the rattle, sounds are made which they can distinctly hear. Try shaking the rattle and observe the baby looking for the rattle. The baby may even talk in response to the rattle’s sounds. If the baby enjoys the music, the baby might even try clapping their hands and start cooing in rhythm to the music.

One of the most relaxing sounds to a baby is the voice of the parents. Talk to the baby while doing your chores, such as changing diapers, preparing milk, and putting baby to sleep. Get the baby accustomed to your voice. Different tones of your voice can send varying messages to the baby’s mind. Try humming or singing a song to the baby while putting them to sleep. If you sing the song often, the baby will recognize the tune after a while. Exposing the child to different kinds of music will provide them with a vast range of music, such as classical, pop and rock. They may display different reactions depending on the type of music. It will enhance their listening skills and concentration. Their growth and development are greatly improved through music.
Once they learn to speak, they will be able to join you in the song. They might learn to sing from listening to the music. This is one way to develop their singing talents. Be careful of playing the television or introducing other sounds as they may get attuned to those sounds too, and there may be offensive words that you want to prevent them from hearing.

Your newborn baby is safe in the crib. If they need anything, they will cry and you come along and take care of them. Everything seems orderly and organized but this atmosphere will not last long. In a few weeks, the baby starts climbing out of their crib and crawling everywhere. You should not inhibit them as this is the stage of their life when they start learning to use their limbs. You also enjoy their going around the room as it provides an outlet for their energy. However, you must be sure that the area where they are crawling around is safe for them.

Toddlers tend to be curious about everything and most anything they see goes into their mouth. They do this because babies have a tendency of tasting everything. They use the sense of taste to determine whether the object is acceptable for eating, regardless of whether the object is consumable. The baby is small and can detect many small objects which we might not see lying around. Lint is one item which we might take for granted. The baby on the other hand might be curious and try tasting it. The danger arises if the baby likes the taste and starts swallowing all the lint they can find around the room. There could be other small objects, such as left over scotch tape, staple wires and pieces of paper that we tend to overlook due to their smallness. Use a vacuum to pick up all these small objects. Go slowly over each area of the room, particularly under the dresser or bed since baby can easily crawl under them and get hold of any small item lying there. These small objects are dangerous since it could get stuck in their throat or enter their stomach and cause severe internal damages. Limit the space the baby can crawl around. Eventually the child will be big enough to go from room to room on their own but hopefully by that time, you have been able to instill some discipline on what they should be putting in their mouth.

The other type of dirt which are not visible to the eyes are the germs on the floor. You could be spreading germs all over the floor when walking around. Dust could be gathering in hard to access places on the floor. Also, the baby could urinate on the floor and be unnoticed by us. Be sure and disinfect the floor regularly. Food droppings could lie on the floor and attract ants and other insects. When visitors come to see the baby, be sure to bring the baby out to them. Do not allow them in the room where the baby is permitted to crawl. The room should be hygienic and sanitary for the protection and safety of the baby. It is possible that small screws or items from bigger toys could get loose and fall from the toy, making it a dangerous object for the baby. Maintain a regular schedule to clean the room. Be meticulous and detailed in your cleaning as the life you save may be your baby.

Babies like throwing things. Make sure the toys are light and do not chip off easily. Chipped toys can incur sharp edges which could harm the baby. Heavy toys could accidentally fall on baby when they try to lift it. It is nice to see a baby at play. Be sure that the baby is safe and happy in their surroundings.

Children are very active and energetic. They get bored easily and always look for things to keep them busy. They sleep when they get tired and they play and run around when they are awake. Since they get to sleep at any time, it becomes difficult to find the right time for them to sleep at night, especially if they had a long afternoon nap.

Try setting a nap time for them in the morning and afternoon so it will not conflict with the time you want them to sleep at night. It is critical to have them sleep at the appropriate time in the morning. Having a nap time in late morning will disrupt the afternoon and evening schedules whereas in the early morning, they are not yet sleepy. Set a time for them to wake up in the morning and get them accustomed to waking up at the same time every morning. It may be difficult for us since we may have to sacrifice waking up late during weekends, Weekends are the days we get to sleep late and rest a bit longer but if we want the children to get accustomed to waking up at a prescribed time daily, we will have to be present to take care of them once they wake up. If the child wakes up at an early hour, you might have the chance of exposing the child to the early morning breeze which can be exhilarating and invigorating.

Try t o keep the child busy till mid-morning so they will feel slightly tired. Place them in a quiet room with mood music to settle them down. The room should be dimmed and the curtains closed to keep out the sunlight. You can have them watch some educational television shows or other shows that can lull them to sleep. Avoid television programs that show a lot of activity or action. Teach them to rest a while after playing active games. Once they wake up, have them stretch and move around before serving them lunch. After lunch, allow them to play a while. This will give them time to digest their food calmly. Avoid strenuous games as they may get upset stomachs. Bring them back to the quiet room for an afternoon nap. They can play strenuous and active games once they wake up. The nap times should not be long. Consider it a rest period for them to relax and unwind. The afternoon games should be fairly long and tiring, particularly if the child has group mates and neighborhood children to play with.

Teach the child to understand that sunsets are indicators for them to stop playing and head for home. They should be in the house when it starts getting dark. Teach them to wash and eat their dinner. After dinner, allow them to watch television for a while. This gives you time to clean the dining and kitchen areas. It also gives the child time to digest their food. When you are done with your chores, give the child a bath and get them ready for bed. Be sure the bedroom is cool and well ventilated. It is hard to sleep in a hot and stuffy room. This may be a good time to bond with the child. Try reading to them some stories or talking to them about the games and fun they had during the day. As you bond with the child, try to calm them down and lull them into a lethargic state. Playing some restful music in the background could help set the environment. Some children might have favorite television programs which they want to see regularly. Arrange a television schedule with them and make sure they do not abuse it.

Keep a small night light on in their room. Some children are frightened of the dark and having a small light in the room can calm them down. Children will eventually get over their fears. The light is also helpful if you have to enter their dark room in the middle of the night. Try to maintain at least 10 hours of night sleep for the child. The number of hours may change as they grow older.
